Melting Pot 2007

COMMENTS FROM THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF MELTING POT 2007 CERAMIC EXHIBITION MADE BY THE JUDGE

WENDY HATFIELD-WITT

"This is a wonderful venue which gives local emerging artists a chance to exhibit alongside established artisans both local and interstate.

This ceramic exhibition is a very important part of the Cairns visual arts community as it is a vehicle for artists to make social and cultural comment or just simply the opportunity to create just for the fun of it.

Exhibitions always start conversations and inspire new ways of critical thinking for the onlooker as well as the artist. It is obviously highly valued in the community and this is illustrated by the many and diverse sponsors.

This is a very diverse exhibition and was quite difficult to judge. I looked at technical skills, aesthetics, innovativeness and unique individual interpretation. The pieces which I have chosen as prize winners amply fit this criteria. They are outstanding examples of contemporary Australian craft and will-represent-City of Cairns well".
