A History of Ceramics in Cairns.

Cairns Potters Club Inc launched a booklet Three Decades of Ceramics in Far North Queensland.   An informal History of Cairns Potters Club, at the Cairns City Library Friday 21 January 2005.

With funding assistance from Arts Queensland, the book was authored by Lone White, president of the club for more than 15 years and a life member of the Club. Lone has also been involved in editing Arts in North Queensland (Published by Cairns Art Society Inc.) and writing, Lasting Impressions, a ceramic Mural Project, (Published by Cairns Potters Club Inc).

Ms. White said, In this small booklet the aim is to examine the early development of studio ceramics in Far North Queensland, outline both past and current trends, and explore the unique direction of the art as it relates to history, influences and environment.  I also wish to document the role played by Cairns Potters Club and other relevant organisations in keeping this art/craft alive.

She added, North Queenslands ceramic traditions are still relatively young, only about 40 years old, astonishing when you think that pottery is one of the world's oldest documented art forms (more than 15,000 years B.C. in Japan.

We have, within this generation, begun to establish a pottery tradition here in the Cairns area.  It has been exciting to have taken part in its formation and development and it will be interesting to see where it will take us in the future.

The book will retail for $15 ( $1 postage inside Australia) and will be available from The Cairns Potters Club Inc., PO Box 1470 Cairns Qld 4870 or by
phone 04 40537508.

Orders are welcome.
