Brisbane Based Ceramist David Oswald as judge for the Cairns Potters Club 25 Jubliee National Ceramics Exhibition selected the following works, for the awards from a total of 95 entries.

David in collaboration with the Potters Club executive and the Director of the Cairns Regional Gallery also selected to works for inclusion in the Cairns Regional Gallery Collection. These acquisitions were financed by the Cairns Potters Club and the Gallery VIPs.

Judge’s Statement

'The migration north to my town of birth, was a very rewarding one as a tutor and judge of the "Melting Pot" exhibition. The task of extracting a handful of award winning artworks is not an easy one, especially when you are confronted with ninety five diverse forms in clay.

The process for decision is ultimately a personal one by the judge but should be based on some form of criteria. My career as a practicing ceramic artist is influenced greatly by wheel thrown and glazed vessels.

Whether the artwork is traditional, conceptual, sculptural or utilitarian, which defines the finished art form? Where are common elements of concept, design, process and an ability to react to the wonderful medium of clay that are at the essence?

These element are critical, the creation of an award winning piece and the pieces that I have chosen reflect these qualities.'
